Milla

Wait, what?

“What do you mean I’m the new guardian?”

I searched their faces for any sign of joking, but the sheepish expression on Mrs. Hayes’ face and the serious look on Trevor’s told me they were serious. I was supposed to be the guardian of the magic stone that I found in the woods.

Something that was supposed to be the catalyst to a war between three clans of mythical creatures. Something that could get me killed.

Are they serious? Do magical stones suddenly work on a basis of Finders Keepers now? What next? Besides that, this thing was way too much responsibility for a teenager who had gone through enough this year. I’d been trying to find my mother who didn’t seem to be answering my calls every time I tried, let alone trying to find a way to tell my father who loves her more than anything. Dad’s going to be devastated when he gets back from conference.

“I can’t do this.” I just got up and left the house, leaving that ridiculous amount of responsibility there with the people who it belonged to. Whether they put it in a vault, back in the woods or destroy it, it didn’t matter to me. I wasn’t about to involve myself any further in that mess.

“Milla, wait!” Trevor’s voice called out to me from the house. I didn’t want to turn around. Why should I? It wasn’t until I heard the sound of him running up behind me that I stopped with a groan. “Milla.”

“What, Trevor?”

He held out the stone to me, the thing was glowing again as if it was angry with me. “You can’t just leave it with us. It attached itself to you, remember? The magic levels go crazy whenever you’re too far and that is not a good thing to happen in a house of wolf-shifters.” Great, so it throws magical tantrums like a kid too?

“Then chuck it out in the middle of the trees or something. I don’t want anything to do with it or this war of yours.”

Trevor let out a sigh before taking my hand and placing the rock in it. “Whether you want to or not, you are, as of now,the guardian of the stone.”

I looked down at it before winding my arm up and chucking it as far as I could into the forest. “There’s your stone.” With that, I stormed off as Trevor went after the stone. What part of I don’t want to be involved did this family not get? The problem would be solved if they just buried it somewhere that couldn’t be found by the dragons instead of placing it on a really obvious pedestal in the middle of the woods.

When I made it to the edge of the Hayes’ driveway, a car pulled up and blocked my path. When the window was rolled down, there was a man in the driver’s seat that I’d seen all over the walls of that house: Trevor’s father.

“Aren’t you forgetting something?” He said before I turned to see Trevor running up the driveway again with the stone in his hand.
